The Schenefelder Holt residential estate in Hamburg's Iserbrook district dates from the late 1960s. A 14-storey high-rise building with two single-storey rows of shops is the centre of the complex. In 2011, extensive measures began to refurbish the buildings and revitalise the neighbourhood in terms of urban development. Public, semi-private and private spaces were clearly rezoned as a fundamental prerequisite for the revitalisation.

In the course of the sustainable, energy-efficient refurbishment, the high-rise building with 84 flats was given a new façade and a completely new appearance. A sculptural façade relief overlays the vertical structure of the existing façades and creates a new structure. Colour accents in reddish brown and pearl beige promote the desired differentiation of the appearance. A monotonously stacked high-rise residential building was thus transformed into a vital, differentiated landmark that offers new urban design perspectives from every side and provides the settlement with an unmistakable point of orientation.

The façade is structured by a basic structure made of an ivory-colored and slightly shiny thermal insulation composite system that is placed over the façade in a net-like manner. This encloses the curtain walls covered with colored aluminum bond panels as well as the windows and loggias.

In addition to the local amenities and service facilities, the new buildings contain a total of 24 flats. The energy measures for renovation and new construction were supported with funds from the Hamburg Housing Bank and KfW.
