Fire station in Wemb
Weeze | 2021
On the Schafweg site in the Wemb district of the municipality of Weeze in North Rhine-Westphalia, a new fire station was built for the regional fire brigade. The building consists of two flat structures that intersect by almost five metres. Due to the common grey clinker brick façade, the new buildings once again form a unit. The design was awarded 1st prize in the architectural competition.

The first cubature of the entire building is an approximately 320 m² and 5.75 m high hall for fire engines. The main fire brigade building, a social wing with changing rooms and a training room, is connected to it at right angles. A workshop and additional storage rooms complete the room programme of the fire station. The technical rooms are located on the first floor above the main building.

For the façade, clinker bricks in standard format in the colour aquaterra Salinagrau (grey) were chosen. The main openings of the building, such as the fire brigade gates and the main entrance with training as well as the alarm entrance, were framed with red clinker and show a metallic red core.

The outdoor facilities of the new building are divided into natural and functional recreational areas. The functional areas are all located in the direct vicinity of the building. One of these is the car park with its 23 parking spaces in the south-eastern area of the site. Its location ensures quick access to the fire station via Schafweg from the direction of the town centre. In addition, an adjoining lawn offers a possible extension for another 12 parking spaces.

In addition to the functional properties, great attention was paid to a sustainable construction and an efficient and economical operation of the building. Among other things, heat is provided by a combined heat and power unit and the ventilation systems have a highly efficient heat recovery system.
