Vitalquartier der Diakovere Hannover Seelhorst
Hannover | 2022
A pergola-shaped plant construction of the willow church has become a symbol of the emerging residential ensemble for the Diakovere Altenhilfe Henriettenstift in the south of Hannover. The church has been erected in 2011 on the territory of the Diakovere, where the new neighbourhood will be developed now, after its design has recently won a competition. In particular the public areas are going to adopt the interwoven structure and the open character of the rare church construction.

All apartments meet the needs of handicapped people, as for example wheelchair users. A diversity of functions in the ground floor area provides the inhabitants with important services throughout the day and contributes to the lively atmosphere in the neighbourhood. The landscape design with its green communicative spaces ensures a high quality of stay as well.

The ensemble consists of three four- to five-storey volumes and one additional building situated a little bit apart. With their L-shaped footprint two of the buildings form a vivid space while the third one complements them as a simple cube. Clear and calm geometry and only few surface materials give the ensemble a homogenous appearance.

The regular punctuated façades, which are clad with bricks in warm sandy colours, have been developed out of apartment floor plans. Room-high glazing emphasizes the entry areas to the public spaces. Arcades, deep loggias and generous glazing of the ground floors raise the lightness of the whole ensemble. The difference between brick and glass surfaces makes it easy to recognize their particular use and enhances the spatial orientation in the quarter. The structure of the willow church influences the design of the horizontal steel railings of the loggias, which have willow mesh fill-ins made in traditional manual work.

The whole project concept is based on a barrier-free design. Therefore it has been important to find the best possible solution for the floor plans with good proportions in order to ensure a good daylight exposure. Each building has a multifunctional concept with residential areas in the upper floors and commercial spaces in the ground floors. Apart from local supplies as for example a bakery or a medical practice the inhabitants have also all necessary offers in regards to their demands such as social, multipurpose or daycare rooms.

The buildings are designed as energy-efficient type 70 or 55.
