Tauentzienstraße 5
Berlin-Schöneberg | 2011
New residential and commercial building

The modern commercial building with a two-storey wing replaces the former building on the Tauentzienstrasse, west of Wittenberg Square. The existing rear building with the second wing in the back section of the site was retained and connected to the new building.
Two retail units share the basement, ground floor and the first floor of the entire building. This excludes the access area and the shared spaces for bicycles and storage. The contemporary maisonette apartments are located on the upper floors of the courtyard building. Above the large-scale display windows on the ground and first floor are the office floors, with floor to ceiling windows and glass balustrades, separated by massive façade surfaces out of dark natural stone, horizontal silver anodized folded aluminum sheets along the floor plates and bay windows. Also the set back attic floor, framed on both sides, opens up to the street through a continuous band of windows. The courtyard side, also rhythmically articulated by large-scale floor to ceiling windows, is accentuated by various colors on the enclosed, plastered façade surfaces.
